With all this depressing weather I’ve teamed up with Jet2Holidays to put together a list of some great cheap winter sun holidays that might tempt you to jet off somewhere new this winter. Soaking up some vitamin D in a beautiful environment doesn’t have to be expensive. There are plenty of affordable options for a trip to the sun in winter departing from airports all across the UK. Let’s see what Jet2Holidays has to offer.
Winter Sun Destinations in Europe
Madeira is one of my favourite holiday spots in Europe. I spent a few days there with my boyfriend for his birthday and it was magical. The volcanic nature of the island mean soaring mountains, black sand beaches and great hiking trails (the levadas). The wine is to die for (and cheap) and the food is delicious. Try the traditional bolo de caco which is a local bread normally served with garlic butter. Being an island it’s obviously fantastic for seafood too.
Weather-wise it won’t be sweltering in January but it will be considerably hotter than the UK or Ireland. For example, temperatures can be around 16-18 degrees Celsius in winter. Which is good enough for me in the depths of winter.
When it comes to Madeira Jet2holidays offer a variety of different accommodations and holiday options. But my top pick is the Savoy Saccharum Resort and Spa. I’ve stayed there before and it is absolutely stunning. It’s a bit further out (not right in the capital of Funchal), which is why it always seems ridiculously under priced. But if you rent a car, which is the best way to see Madeira anyway, then it’s totally fine. The breakfast is a huge buffet with free flowing bubbly. Oh and the rooftop pool has an incredible view over the sea which is phenomenal at sunset.

Portugal, The Algarve
I LOVE Portugal. It’s where I met by boyfriend and where I had my first press trip. When it comes to cheap winter sun holidays Portugal is perfect. It’s sunny, affordable and easy to get to. The average temperature is around 17 degrees Celsius, with just a few rainy days.
The Algarve sometimes gets a bit of a bad reputation because people assume it’s not as unique or authentic as other holiday destinations. However, that is not the case. There are plenty of spots in the Algarve that aren’t over run with tourists, especially in the winter months. With beautiful beaches, great food and world famous golf courses the Algarve makes a fantastic holiday spot.
I’m a big fan of Lagos and Albufeira myself but there are plenty of other towns in the Algarve to explore. I learned to surf and kite surf in Lagos. Jet2holidays offer plenty of options in Lagos. You can choose to go all inclusive, self catering, boutique hotel, family-friendly etc.
You can read more about Jet2Holidays winter sun holidays to Portugal HERE. For example, you could stay in a 5* Hilton Spa Resort for 7 nights in January for around £438 pp (that includes flights, accommodation and transfers).
The Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are always a popular choice for winter sun holidays in Europe. Whether it’s Tenerife, Lanzarote or beyond, Jet2 has you covered.
I’ve visited Lanzarote for winter sun a couple of years ago with my family and it was perfect for a bit of R&R in the sun. The temperatures were hot (the low 20s) with a nice breeze and there was still plenty to do. Tenerife is a great option too. Visit Mt. Teide national park, a world heritage site which is home to Mount Teide, a dormant volcano. Or join one of the whale and dolphin watching tours.
Los Cristianos in Tenerife is a great resort area, but there are plenty more to choose from. Book a Thalasso Spa hotel with an on site bowling alley, or an adults only boutique hotel right on the beach.
You can read more about Jet2holidays winter sun holidays to the Canary Islands HERE. My pick would be to stay in the Hard Rock Hotel in Tenerife for 7 nights in January, bed and breakfast, for £576pp.
Malta and Gozo
The Maltese islands are an almost mythical destination home to Calypso’s Cave, medieval dungeons and more. Malta and Gozo are the two main islands. Malta is the larger, more populous one. Gozo is a bit more rural but full of character. Temperatures are around 16/17 degrees Celsius in winter with a few rainy days each month.
I haven’t been to Malta since I was a child but I loved it then, with its stunning clear water and beautiful beaches. It’s a fantastic place for scuba diving if you’re qualified or thinking of getting your qualification. If you’re into history Malta has plenty, including megalithic temples that are apparently the world’s oldest free standing structures.
Again, there are a wide variety of accommodation options to choose from in various parts of Malta and Gozo. Choose from modern, boutique hotels or family-friendly apartments, spa hotels or luxury resorts.
You can read more about Jet2holidays winter sun escapes to Malta & Gozo HERE. Jet2Holidays do not offer holidays to Malta and Gozo in January, February and March. However, You can visit April through to the end of December.
