I have DREAMED of Plitvice lakes for the past couple of years. Probably since I started using Pinterest to be honest (if you don’t use Pinterest you won’t understand that reference)! Much like the Fairy Pools of Scotland , the photos of Plitvice lakes in Croatia that flooded my dashboard daily looked surreal. It seemed like something straight out of Fern Gully ( If you don’t know what Fern Gully is, well, we can’t be friends) , a fantasy land where nymphs and fairies would make their homes.
Surely no place on earth could actually have water so clear or so beautifully coloured?! I needed to find out. Every time I heard of any one going to Croatia I would implore them to visit Plitvice lakes and find out, on my behalf, whether it really did look like some sort of fairy wonderland. But in the end, second hand stories of it’s beauty just weren’t enough for me. As always, I needed to find out for myself what was so special about Plitvice lakes. And what did I find??
Well, SEE FOR YOURSELVES.
Plitvice Lakes – Where the Fairies Live
I think it needs to be said that I went to Plitvice Lakes on a cold, rainy day in September. So imagine how incredible these photos would be if it had been sunny! Though I reckon I got lucky with the small number of other tourists around. Made for a higher probability of fairy sightings. Usually they just hide when all the tourists come bustling through. And believe me, there are PLENTY of places to hide!
And remember, every time you say you don’t believe in fairies, a fairy somewhere dies! So don’t do it guys. If Peter Pan has taught me anything it’s “I DO believe in fairies”.
If you need a place to stay on your way to Plitvice Lakes don’t forget to check out Lazy Monkey Hostel in Zadar.
So what do you think?
Are the Plitvice lakes an undiscovered fairy oasis?
Is there anywhere you’ve been that seems a more likely location for fairy headquarters?? Let me know!
Plitvice Lakes, look beautiful! Totally like somewhere you would find fairies 🙂 And that water is so blue! I wondered the same about the water when I visited Lake Tekapo in NZ, I couldn’t believe it could be so vivid but it was so bright, definitely worth seeing for real 😀 Hopefully I’ll get to visit here soon!
GLAD YOU AGREE 🙂 Oh gosh, New Zealand. Too wonderful. I love that country.
Oh my goodness these waterfalls are so stunning! Adding Plitvice Lakes to my bucket list now!
IT IS SO MAGICAL!!!!!! hahaa.
great reminder! I always wanted to visit Plitvice 🙂 What season would you recommend? I am not really tempting to go during the main tourist season to be honest.
I went in September and it was very quite, however it was a bit drizzly. But if you don’t mind a spot of rain, I’d definitely recommend the end of September 🙂 The photos still turned out beautiful!
