The Aztec Spa Torquay is one of the best spa offerings in the town of Torquay, Devon. We ALL know that there are many, many benefits of a spa day. So, I treated myself and my boyfriend to a spa day there and decided to review it for anyone thinking of doing the same. Here’s all the info on what to expect from a spa day at the Aztec; the pool, the lunch and the treatments.
Where is it & How Do I Get There?
The Aztec Spa is located within the TLH Leisure resort complex just 10minutes walk from the Torquay train station or a couple of minutes drive/taxi from the Torquay harbour. Local buses also stop just outside the Aztec Spa so it’s incredibly accessible. If you don’t know where Torquay is, it’s a seaside town in South Devon that has been voted Britain’s best seaside town 2015 in the TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards. For more information, read this list of reasons why I love Torquay.
What About The Treatments?
The Aztec Spa offers a variety of treatments. To have a look at their treatment brochure just click here. The one we went for was the Aztec Sunrise. This package includes use of the facilities (such as the pool), 1 spa treatment and lunch. Considering my little old lady back and my boyfriend’s shoulder issues we both opted for the Swedish back, neck and shoulder massage but there were plenty of other options available. I was mildly apprehensive to be honest because the last massage I had was in Thailand and brought me to tears…… not happy tears. But Holy Mother of God, this Swedish massage was magical.
After changing into our robes our lovely masseuses greeted us individually by name with a smile and a handshake. Then we were led to the couple’s therapy room which was lit with candles and mood lighting. I think what I was most impressed with (other than the massage itself obviously) was the fact that the pillow I had my face in was lavender scented and I was looking directly into a basin of water filled with frangipani flowers. If I couldn’t relax and unwind here then I don’t know where I could.
I don’t really NEED to go into too much detail about the massage as I’m sure most of you are more familiar with the wonders of a good massage than I am, BUT I will say that I have now been converted to a massage lover. I felt amazing afterwards. I think I was half-asleep as I left the treatment room. Luckily we were free to lounge around the spa, have some tea/coffee/water and generally just chill out. Then it was time to get changed and head to the pool!
What Other Facilities Are There?
The Aztec Spa Torquay has an impressive outdoor pool as well as two in door pools. The Aztec Falls pool, pictured above, is 25m and the water temperature is 29 degrees C. The Aztec Falls Fun pool, a free form fun pool, is heated to 31.5 degrees C. We visited the Aztec Falls pool which, due to the early time of our treatment on a weekday, was lovely and quiet. I TRIED to do a few lengths to help my back but my boyfriend was hell bent on dunking me under the water, making my mascara run all over the place. I know, rookie mistake, I should have worn water-proof.
There is also a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room for use by hotel and spa guests. If you’re after some light hearted fun there is a game room with pool tables, bowling lanes, air hockey, archery and other amusements for children or adults.
The Aztec bistro where we were served lunch has a lovely view of the pool and a great selection on the menu. Being a vegetarian I opted for the Mediterranean vegetable panini which was delicious. They also serve dinner and afternoon tea here, which I think I’d quite like to try next time I’m back in Torquay!
What Did I Think?
This experience was exactly what I needed. The food was amazing, the staff were wonderfully welcoming and helpful and I cannot tell you enough how incredible the massage was. I felt like I had reversed some of the damage that I’d done to my back in the last year. It was really lovely to share the experience with my other half (are we using that term? Well, it’s in there now, be mad if you want ) as well since we rarely see each other usually (long distance). I can honestly say it was one of the best and most relaxing experiences I’ve had this year.
I also couldn’t get over how reasonable the cost of the Aztec Sunrise package was at £39 per person. The Aztec Spa Torquay in the TLH Leisure Resort is what I call affordable luxury! It’s necessary to treat yourself every once in a while. I’m always reminding myself to be kind to me, and you know what? I think those backpack strap marks on my shoulders might finally be gone.
