As you may know I was recently in London reviewing my favourite hostel . However, let me tell you a little bit about my favourite place to hang out in the UK capital. It is, of course, the famous Borough Market London . This market is a foodie paradise. Now, I’m not exactly what you would call a “foodie”. Sure, I love food but I’m pretty much domestically disabled so a market where everyone has already baked and cooked everything to perfection is obviously my dream location. They sell beautiful flowers too and I’m a sucker for flowers, hint hint boys 😉

WARNING: This post contains foodporn, sweet, sweet foodporn.

About Borough Market London

GREENS

The Borough Market London has been in Southward for 1000 years. Now if that’s not impressive I don’t know what is. I mean they must really know their stuff, right? Trust me, they do. It is, after all, London’s most renowned food market and I reckon it’s the best food market I have ever been to in my entire life. The Borough Market London is located off Borough High Street, between the London Bridge and Borough tube stops. London Bridge is closest but it is only a short walk from Borough station. It is open every day of the week apart from Sunday. Monday to Thursday it is open 10am to 5pm. Friday it is open 10am to 6pm and Saturday it is open 8am to 5pm.

How Does It Feel?

Charming Vendors

The market itself is a web of stalls and stands selling all types of produce. Fresh, colourful and loud is how I would describe this wonderful place. It’s a sort of glorious chaos that, for some reason, never feels over whelming. The vendors are from all corners of the globe and are incredibly knowledgeable. They are notoriously friendly. Before you know what’s happened you’ll be leaving the market a few £s lighter and quite a few lbs heavier.

Not that the vendors have a hard sell on their hands. Everything in that market practically sells itself. I would eat circles around myself in that place if I was blessed with the metabolism of a teen boy. Unfortunately, I am not, so I had to restrict myself. That, of course, didn’t stop me eating there once every day for the three days I was in London.

So What Did I Eat?

CAKE CAKE CAKE

Day one I started with a raspberry cheesecake and sweet baby Jesus it was the most amazing cheesecake I have ever tasted. The base was everything I’ve ever wanted in a cheesecake base and, to be honest, before that moment I wasn’t even sure what I did want from a cheesecake base. BUT, whatever it was, that cake had it. THANK YOU Borough Market London. To say I struggled with finishing it would be a lie. Better to acknowledge that it was a massive slice, but it was so delicious that I ate it all with ease and only the tiniest pang of guilt. All of this took place while a very talented gentleman performed for the foodies milling around trying to decide what their treat for the day would be. It’s nice to be serenaded while you eat cheesecake. Note to future suitors, serenade me whilst feeding me cheesecake.

Vege FOOD

Day two I opted to have my main meal for the day in the Borough Market Londond. Being vegetarian didn’t actually limit my options too much. In fact, there were so many exciting vege options that I found it hard to chose. In the end I decided on a spiced lentil crepe filled with masala potato and served with chickpeas topped with sev. Unbelievable. I could eat that every day for the rest of the year and I wouldn’t get bored. Well, maybe a little bored but it would still be delicious!

Day three I stopped into the market on my way to the train station. I couldn’t decide between a brownie or a cheesecake and, luckily, I didn’t have to. I went hard and got myself a CHEESECAKE BROWNIE. Yes, that is exactly what it sounds like. Basically it is a layer of cheesecake sandwiched between two brownies. Perhaps it sounds like overkill? Something you’d see on Man Vs Food? But trust me, it was perfect.

The End

So I guess the moral of the story is that any trip to London is not complete without a gluttonous trip to the Borough Market London.  Whether you have a sweet tooth or prefer savoury, there is something wonderful waiting for you.  If you like a more guided food experience then make sure to check out the Soho Twilight Food Tour.

Maybe you’ve been to an amazing market or had some out of this world market food? Leave me a comment below and tell me all about it. I’m a bit of a market fiend so I’d love to discover a new one to check out.

One thing that I regret not doing during my trip to London was visiting Borough Market when they were open!

I lived right by Borough Market for a year while in London and it was my lunch stop about 60% of the time (I’m obsessed). I made it through most of the food stands lining Southwark Cathedral’s gate so if you need any suggestions for next time, just check out this post! http://lifewellwandered.com/2014/12/borough-market-food-stalls/
